PRODUCT USE - ACCURACY

Tanita and the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Method

Dr Garry Egger, (MPH PhD MAPS-Scientific Director, Gutbusters), a well known personality in the health and fitness fields, gave the following appraisal:

"Bio Impedance Analysis in one of the few scientifically acceptable forms of body fat measurement currently available. Scales providing BIA measures, as well as weight are now accepted as providing an extra dimension to the field of fat measurement, and under several conditions are more highly recommended than some traditional measures such as body mass index."

The accuracy of the Tanita Body Fat Monitors has been tested through a variety of research organisations and universities and the test results have confirmed that the monitor is accurate within +/- 3 percent of the institutional standards of body composition analysis.

What factors affect accuracy?

From day to day it's normal for the body to experience a variation of +/- 2 kg's in weight, which is equivalent to about 2% body fat, due to changes in hydration levels. Your body has varying degrees of moisture content based on food, alcohol, caffeine, illness, urination and bathing patterns. The more dehydrated your body, the higher fluctuation in your body fat percentage.

Women experience a much greater change in hydration levels throughout their menstrual cycle. To establish the most reliable baseline, women should take a body fat reading every day for an entire month to understand the full range of normal fluctuation. Pregnant women may receive inaccurate readings, although there is no danger involved. The monitor is not recommended for use by people with pacemakers or other medical devices.

For the most accurate body fat reading make sure testing conditions are consistent:

  • Readings should be taken at the same time of day each time (5.00-6.00 pm is ideal). If this time is unsuitable for you, choose any time of day and stick to it.
  • Readings should be taken at least 3 hours after waking, eating or vigorous exercise.
  • Ensure your height, gender and mode (adult, athlete or child) have been entered correctly.
  • Socks, stockings and as much clothing as possible should be removed.
